The new M4 MacBook Pro is going to launch in just under a month. Usually, by now, we hear a lot of leaks and rumors, but we haven’t seen the laptop yet. However, a surprising leak has come out this time.
A Russian YouTuber named Wylsacom shared an unboxing video of the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 chip. He showed five important updates that will come with the new laptop. These changes make the M4 laptop very exciting! But I worry that Apple might have made the upcoming M4 Pro model seem less important.
Last year, I called the M3 Pro MacBook Pro the “awkward middle child.” This doesn’t mean it’s a bad laptop—I love mine and think it’s one of the best MacBooks you can buy. But when comparing the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max models, the M3 Pro’s performance in the middle makes it hard to sell to most people. They can usually do everything they need with the regular M3 MacBook Pro.
With these five rumored upgrades coming to the regular M4 MacBook Pro, it might become even harder to sell the M3 Pro model.
1. Space Black Everything
Let’s be honest. One of the reasons I chose the M3 Pro was because of its cool matte black finish. It looks both useful and strong. Now, it seems that Space Black will also be available for the regular M4 MacBook Pro.
2. M4 is bigger and better
The M3 chip had some limits because it had 8 CPU cores. Now, just like the M4 iPad Pro, the new chip will have 10 cores! This could make it up to 25% faster than the M3. Some leaked test results support this idea.
3. The leaked tests for the M4 chip show that this is true.
Speaking of that, look at how super fast the single-core performance is! If this doesn’t make every Copilot+ PC a little scared, I’m not sure what will.
Laptop | Geekbench 6 single-core | Geekbench 6 multicore |
---|---|---|
M4 MacBook Pro | 3864 | 15288 |
M3 MacBook Pro | 3138 | 12018 |
M3 Pro MacBook Pro | 3154 | 14357 |
4. More Thunderbolt 4 for all
One thing that was a bit annoying with the M3 MacBook Pro was that it only had two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Most of the time, it was fine, but sometimes we needed more ports for our accessories and gadgets, and it just wasn’t enough.
